Ravy Dictionary

In this little bit of an essay I entend to try and explain just what the hell all that jargon is.

5-Ton: Cargo Truck.

A.C.U.: Army Combat Uniform. A greenish digital camouflage pattern.

Author: Generally used to describe those that make web comics. I try very hard not to use that phrase to describe what I do. I prefer cartoonist or editor.

B.D.U.: Battle Dress Uniform. A wood land pattern made up of green, black, brown, and tan.

Barracks: Military apartment complex. Some good, some not so good.

Cartoonist: Someone who draws comics. One of my preferred titles.

C.C.S.: Can't Comprehend Shit

Character Model: Phrase I use to describe sprites.

Chem-Light: Stick that glows through chemical reactions.

Cherry: New guy.

C.H.S.: Can't Hear Shit.

Commo Wire: Telephone wire.

C.Q.: Charge of Quarters. Guys designated to stay up all night to guard the barracks.

C.R.S.: Can't Remember Shit.

C.S.S.: Can't See Shit.

‘Cruit Boots: Black all leather boots formerly issued to recruits.

DA2A: Duned Adventures 2: Afghanime. Sub-comic based on the deployment to Afghanistan.

Date Stamp: The date, usually in the upper right corner, when a comic was completed. Sometimes you may see multiple dates. That just means that particular comic has been altered several times.

D.C.U.: Desert Camouflage Uniform. Several shades of tans and brown.

DNDADV: Duned Adventures. Sub-comic based on the deployment to Iraq.

Desert Boots: Tan leather with canvas minus vents.

Di-Fac: Dining Facility.

E-1: Private. PVT.

E-2: Private. PV2.

E-3: Private First Class. PFC.

E-4: Specialist. SPC. Corporal. CPL.

E-5: Sergeant. SGT. Sergeant is also used to address E-5 through E-8 (Master Sergeant.)

E-6: Staff Sergeant. SSG.

E-7: Sergeant First Class. SFC.

E-8: Master Sergeant. MSG. First Sergeant. 1SG.

E-9: Sergeant Major. SGM. Command Sergeant Major. CSM.

Editor: Probably the most accurate word to describe sprite comic makers. One of my preferred titles.

E-Tool: Shovel.

Fighting Position: Area of defense against enemy attack.

Flak/Frag Vest: Fragmentary resistant vest. NOT bullet resistant. Also not B.S. resistant.

F.O.B.: Forward Operating Base. Camp/fort.

GW2S: Gulf War 2 Syndrome: Sub-comic based on all the left over ideas I never got around to using from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hadji/Hajji: What most G.I.s use to describe Muslims.

Hajji-mart: What most G.I.s use to describe bazaars set up by the locals.

Jungle Boots: Black leather with canvas and vent holes.

Kevlar: Bullet resistant material used to make helmets among other things.

Laundry Marker: Like a Magic Marker or Sharpie.

L.B.V.: Load Bearing Vest. Used to carry ammo and canteens and such.

Local National: Used to described the local people in a foreign country.

L.T.: Slang for lieutenant.

M916/A-1,2,3: Semi- Truck.

Main Line: Comics consecutively numbered.

M.R.E.: Meals Ready to Eat. Lots of food, not enough toilet paper.

Moon Dust: Picture baby powder, only it gets sticky when wet.

N.V.G.: Night Vision Goggles. Allows you to see at night, sort of. In Game Boy green.

Old Sarge: An E-5 on up who has been around awhile.

Open Bay: Barracks with a large open room for a group of people. No privacy.

Out of Story: Obsolete term used to describe a comic that has nothing to do with the current story line.

PCS: Permanent Change of Station. When a soldier moves from one post to another.

PCS Award: A medal or certificate given to a soldier when changing stations.

PLUGGER: Like a GPS device, only ten times more expensive and doesn’t work.

Police Call: Pick up trash.

Post Season: Obsolete term used to describe the timeframe from June to December.

Pre-Po: Pre-Positioned. Equipment stored and then staged for use around the world to expedite unit movement.

Pro-Mask: Gas mask.

RAVY: The main comic.

RCC: Ravy Classic Comics. Sub-comic digital remakes of the hand drawn comics.

Rule: 1984: Once a comic has been published for public viewing, it will not be altered. However, spelling and graphical errors may be fixed. Only under extreme circumstances will I alter a comic.

Rule: No Personal Assault Comics: Why waste good character models on jokes that are just not funny?

SAPI Plate: Bullet resistant plating used in newer flak vests.

Scrap Comic: Comic not in the main line for any reason.

Season: Comic year that goes from January to December.

Separate Rations: Money paid to eat in the chow hall/Di-Fac.

SGLI: Service Members Group Life Insurance.

Shower Shoes: Flip flops.

Story Based Comic: Despite that fact that I did indeed mention the word "story" a time or twelve, Ravy Comics is not a story based comic.

Sub-Comic: Part of the Ravy Universe, but has it own banner.

Syndicated Comic: Comics whose primary publication is print media. Can also be published on the internet.

Syndicated Cartoonist: Someone who makes comics that are primarily published in the print media. Also can be published on the internet.

VEEP: Vice President.

Water Distributor: Big water tank on wheels.

Web Comic: Comic strip whose primary publication is the internet.

Web Cartoonist: Someone who makes comics that are primarily published on the internet.
